The Los Angeles Times reports on a housing cost tool developed for the paper.

The Times operates a calculator that enables the user to identify where they can afford to live based on their income relative to local housing costs. The Time’s website reports: “Economists say you shouldn't spend more than 30% of your earnings on rental costs. Using Zillow data, we mapped out the state's rental market. Use this tool to see where you can afford to live.” The tool works by allowing the user to plug in their income and then it highlights locations where a person can find housing they can afford.
